Monday, July 8th. We made it to Cherokee, NC today. Left home at 8:15 AM and arrived here at 6:00 PM. 570 miles in 10 hours including 2 rest stops and a lunch stop. Averaged 44.5 mpg with most of the driving at 75 mph. We're driving a VW Jetta diesel and it sure gets great mileage but is still roomy with a large trunk. Highway driving range about 600 miles.
After checking in we went out to dinner. Walked along the Oconaluftee River which flows through town. As you can see in the 2 photos below, the river was high and really flowing.
Tomorrow morning we head up the Blue Ridge Parkway as far as Asheville, NC where we will spend some time touring the Biltmore Estate which is the old Vanderbilt residence.
