5. Blue Ridge Parkway, Segment 2

Thursday, July 11th - We left Asheville, NC, this morning and proceeded up the Blue Ridge Parkway.  It was very foggy most of the day and later in the day we ran into some rain but we were able to get in the major sight seeing walk we had planned on.  The following 3 photos give you an idea of what the views from the overlooks looked like.

We did get to walk down to Linville Falls.  This is actually a double falls and I've included photos of the upper falls, the loser falls and then a photo that shows both.

We knew that there weren't any places to buy lunch in this section of the parkway so before we left Asheville we stopped at a grocery store and picked up so cold cuts, cheese and sub rolls.  Then after our hike we found a picnic area and made ourselves sandwiches.  As you can see below we had the place to ourselves.

Tonight we are staying in Galax, VA.  We asked our waitress at dinner where the name came from but she didn't know.  It turns out that the galax is a small flowering plant that is native to this area.  Galax is famous (so I hear) as an "ole timey" music center and does have an annual bluegrass fiddlers contest that is a big deal in that genre of music.
